La Haine (Hate)
Directed
by: Mathieu Kassovitz
French, with English subtitles; running time: 96 minutes
Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival 1996, César Award for
Best French Film
France, 1995
La Haine explores themes of poverty, racism, violence and
disaffected youth in modern suburban metropolis. The story takes place
in the multi-ethnic housing project in Paris. It is based the story of the
young Zairian, Makomé Bowole, who was shot and killed while handcuffed
to a radiator in police custody. The films depiction of the problems
of social exclusion, racism, and urban and police violence has provoked much
debate in France. The special screening, obligatory for the entire cabinet,
was arranged by then-prime minister Alain Juppé. At the screening at
Cannes, police guards walked out in protest of its portrayal of police brutality.
The film's authenticity was also questioned by some French audiences: Mathieu
Kassovitz, writer and director, was accused of exaggerating social problems
of France and being an outsider who was merely fascinated by the urban culture
represented (for more information, please check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Haine).
We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Bowling for Columbine (2002)
Winner of 28 awards,
among them
the 55th Anniversary Prize of the Cannes Film Festival and Oscar
Directed by: Michael Moore
Running time: 120 minutes
Wednesday,
February 20
Auditorium, 5:30 p.m.
The documentary
investigates the problem of gun violence in the USA, a cause for death of
11,000 people yearly. Applying constant for Michael Moore's films political
satire, Bowling for Columbine goes beyond issues of the right to a constitutionally
protected Uzi and gun control. Since the conventional reasons of easy availability
of guns, violent entertainment and poverty are insufficient to explain the
high level of violence, the documentary explores societal roots of culture
violence as well as elite political and corporate interests fanning it.*
The day of screening, February 20, is the Non-Violent Resistance Day
in Human Rights Calendar.

(all CEU quiz) TEAM
Tasks: organizing a CEU-wide jeopardy/quiz game related to tolerance

difference: the books in the Living Library are human beings, and the books
and readers enter into a personal dialogue. The books in the Living Library
are people representing groups frequently confronted with prejudices and stereotypes,
and who are often victims of discrimination or social exclusion. In this library,
books cannot only speak, but they are able to reply to the readers' questions,
and the books can even ask questions and learn themselves.
We need volunteers who feel that are belonging to a group that is often subjected to prejudice related to racism and would be ready to act a"books" in order to help breaking down these prejudices/ stereotypes.

please contact Orsi at visjeney@ceu.hu.
Waiting for your reACTion!
In commemoration of liberation of Auschwitz on 27 January 1945
AMEN.*
Directed
by: Konstantin Gavras
2002, 132 minutes
Based on the book by Rolf Hochhuth The Deputy, a Christian Tragedy
(Stellvertreter), the movie questions the established historical concepts.
Revising the role of Pope Pius XII in support of Jewish people during Holocaust,
it calls into question the responsibility of public authorities - religious,
governmental, legal - to react to mass crimes such as Final Solution to 'Jewish
question' in Nazi Germany.
The
film depicts the story of Kurt Gerstein, a German chemical engineer, a virulent
anti-Nazi and devout Protestant, who became an SS officer in order to spy
on Nazi officialdom. After having found out that his work on purifying typhus-infected
water is applied for gassing Jews with Zyklon B, he reaches out for help...
AMEN. raises the problems of ordinary citizens' and official institutions'
stance towards mass killings licensed by the state; of 'world attention' to
the unfolding Holocaust, with the U.S. and the Vatican each asking the other
to verify that people were being killed in 'labor' camps; and other issue
making one think about how a nation and the world community could have stayed
morally indifferent to the fate of so many.
* The period punctuation is part of the title. "Amen" is a Hebrew expression meaning "So be it".
We are
looking forward to seeing you!

HOW FREEDOM IS WON AND HOW TO KEEP IT: LESSONS FROM DEMOCRATIC BREAKTHROUGHS AND THE CURRENT CHALLENGES TO FREEDOM IN THE POST-SOVIET SPACE
public lecture by
Freedom House Chairman Peter Ackerman
followed by a discussion and the screening of
the award-winning 2007 documentary Orange Revolution ( English/Ukrainian/Russian)
In recent years, some of the most dramatic democratic breakthroughs have taken place in countries that once were part of the Soviet Union, notably Georgia and Ukraine. How have these 'color revolutions' fared? And what to make of the dramatic deterioration of democracy and freedom in Russia? What are the current challenges for democrats and civil society in this region and what can be done to assist those who struggle to consolidate their democratic gains and resist backsliding?
The
public lecture, co-organised by the CEU Human Rights Students Initiative
at CEU and Freedom House Europe, took place on January 15th at CEU.
Dr Peter Ackerman, who holds a Ph.D. from The Fletcher School,
Tufts University, is the founding Chair of the International Center on Nonviolent
Conflict in Washington, DC, and one of the world's leading authorities on
nonviolent conflict. Peter Ackerman is a co-author of two seminal books on
nonviolent resistance: A Force More Powerful: A Century of Nonviolent Conflict
and Strategic Nonviolent Conflict: The Dynamics of People Power.
Peter Ackerman was the Executive Producer of the documentary Bringing Down
a Dictator on the fall of Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic, twice
rewarded by the International Documentary Association. In his speech yesterday,
he analysed the concepts of non-violence and non-violent conflict or civil
resistance as distinct from conflict prevention and conflict resolution. He
presented results of a study Freedom in the World embracing analysis of transitional
factors contributing to durability of democracy afterwards.
The lecture was commented by a discussant Matteo
Fumagalli, Assistant Professor
at CEU Department of International Relations and European Studies. After the
lecture and comments, a vivid and quite lengthy open discussion with the audience
took place under moderation of Carsten Schneider,
Assistant Professor at CEU Department of Political Science. The discussion
of the interesting and useful to the participants topic was continued in the
break during reception which followed. Finally, the session was concluded
by the screening of the award-winning 2007 documentary Orange Revolution.
The outline of the plot of the movie: Co-executed
by Peter Ackerman, Orange Revolution
investigates highly controversial 2004 Ukrainian presidential election. The
movie was set in motion after the candidates from the opposition, Viktor Yushchenko
was poisoned. After exit polls had indicated victory of Yushchenko but his
opponent, pro-Kremlin candidate Victor Yanukovych, was declared the winner
of the election, the public sat dumbfounded. That is why massive political
protests in Kyyiv and in all regional centres took place. They resulted in
the unprecedented Supreme Courts decision on the third round of elections
with tougher control over votes calculation leading to a fair Yushchenkos
victory.
